The World Created is the World Maintained

Our world is immersed in some real and challenging problems. Some of them will be very difficult to control or improve. To mention what I believe to be the top three or four are climate change, nuclear proliferation, the likelihood of additional pandemics, and regional wars that could developed into far wider conflicts. These are not happy thoughts. But these problems are real and should not be ignored.

We are making some headway through diplomacy, research, and technology that could surely be a big part of the complicated and numerous solutions we need. Although, we are doing our best to confront these problems we must also consider sincere and fervent prayer. As people of faith, if we believe that God created the World we also believe that God maintains the world.

In the Book of Colossians Paul wrote concerning the God-Christ that by Him were all the visible and invisible things created. And by Him all things are maintained or consist. God did not create the world and go on a vacation nor is He taking a nap. God and His angels in heaven are actively working in the hearts of those who love Him or will love Him along with maintaining the world’s motions and movements according to his plan for our world and the eternal world to come. God is not idle. He is active and lively in the world with His eternal plan in view.

God is not surprised at the the problems the world is facing. Throughout the ages the prophets and Jesus himself prophesied that the world would suffer various natural catastrophes, social upheavals, and disease if we are left on our own. Yet, if we care to trust God and not only depend on our own ingenuity and inventions we have a real chance of turning around or mitigating the overwhelming problems we are facing today; that is, God guiding our discoveries or directly intervening.

This is the time for the people of faith to have faith. And the language of faith is prayer. Faith drives us to prayer because we know that God answers the prayers of the sincere and fervent who love Him. The call to prayer is useless to those who reject that God created the world and maintain the world; who refuse to apprehend what cannot be comprehended. Nevertheless, it is up to those who know that the world was framed by the Word of God and that same Word will maintain it. We should never doubt that climate change, regional wars, nuclear proliferation, world diseases and all the rest is not subject to the providence of God. And who knows what God will do if we humble ourselves and pray.
